Brett Shrubsole is a Trinity College Old Scholar and founder of Broken Empire (men’s social basketball team). Brett also umpires netball in Elizabeth, working the canteen on Friday nights. Friday mornings, Brett stops into STARplex to umpire Friday morning netball.
Brett has been refereeing with the STARplex Monday night men’s social basketball competition for the past year and has become a trusted member of the referee team. In term 3 2021, Brett began refereeing junior games in addition to playing & refereeing in the senior comp. Brett’s dad hangs out in the cafe while Brett runs around the courts – it’s a family affair!
We are highlighting Brett’s community involvement because it is people like Brett that help create an inclusive environment within mainstream sport. Diligent, communicative and patient – dealing with shirt-y men can take a toll on someone. Brett thinks of it as water on a duck’s back – letting the flare ups roll off his shoulders.
